Until they make good on their statement that they "will evaluate" other ways to earn gems this has done nothing but turn the game P2W. That currency is needed to be competitive in the seasons. u guys blind or something all games actually have pictures of inside the game. Tl dr: ads were completely opt-in to award premium currency. for those who r saying anime is not for me and blah blah blah. Without gems from ads it's going to be very hard to compete without buying gems. Now, there are some ways to earn gems through gameplay, but watching completely voluntary ads was a big way to do so. Since the time limit means you can't just grind things out, you basically need to spend some gems in order to rank anywhere on the leaderboard that will actually reward you something.
Gems are used to give buffs like increased XP gain and to unlock slots to equip additional skills and companions on your character. They also reward permanent buffs based on how you finish on the leaderboards. The leagues are short (1-2 weeks) and give you a limited amount of playtime on your character (12, 9 or 6 hours depending on the league). If you're unfamiliar, this is a Diablo-like with seasons/leagues. This is not as altruistic as it may seem.
